Jacob Burks is a Texas surfer, born and raised on the Gulf Coast. He began surfing at around four years old, and just after his 11th birthday, he competed as a grom in his first Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA) competition. He then went on to graduate in 2015 from Texas A&M University at Galveston with his Bachelor of Science degree in Maritime Systems Engineering, setting the stage for his career in surfing instruction not only in terms of experience but also with the necessary educational background.
Jacob is launching his own surf academy, Jacob Burks Surf Academy (JBSA), a place where anyone can build skills, confidence, respect for the ocean, and a genuine passion for surfing. JBSA introduces a new surf education concept to South Padre Island, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Texas surf culture and history, one that celebrates learning, passion, and the beauty of the Gulf Coast.
With over 15 years of experience teaching surfing along the Texas coast, he has dedicated his life to helping others connect with the ocean. Jacob’s surf career has come full swing as God has blessed him with such a unique opportunity to spread the stoke of surfing to next generations in a multi-faceted way. Known for his strong technique, calm approach, and deep respect for surf culture, Jacob has guided countless students, from first-timers to competitive surfers, toward confidence in the water.
He previously worked as a Surf Instructor/Surf Camp Director for Texas Surf Camps and SPI Sessions Watersports, where he introduced surfers to the excitement of catching their very first waves. As a coach and mentor for the South Padre Island Surf Team, he has guided developing surfers as they advanced their skills and prepared for competitive surfing.
Jacob has been judging surf contests for over 15 years and currently serves on the Board of Directors for TGSA as Assistant Head Judge, traveling up and down the Gulf Coast for every contest.
Deeply involved in the Texas surf community, Jacob continues to play an active role in promoting the growth of the sport and fostering ocean awareness among surfers of all ages and abilities. Through every wave and every student, his goal remains the same: to share the joy, discipline, and spirit of surfing with everyone who steps into the ocean.
